Termites

Living in an older house in Hawaii means we are always on the lookout for signs of termites, both subterranean and dry wood termites. Finding active termite populations is always bad news and for aquarium hobbyists it mean moving the fish so that the house can be treated.

The good news is that the termites couldn't have come at a better time. Since the angelfish eggs have been infertile I don't have any larval runs going. I haven't brought in any of the planned new fish yet and I'm currently between fish babysitting jobs. So although I still have quite a few fish to move I don't have the numbers that I usually have. As I'm getting estimates for termite treatment, I'm moving the fish out and when we get those annoying termites taken care of we'll be back on track. Hopefully this will all go smoothly and will take just a few weeks.

  1. Sounds like to much fun Karen. :)
A question have you herd how the Yellow Tang breeding project is doing? I haven't seen a post about the project since last summer.

    1. Hi Ed,

Chad says they're still working with the yellow tang larvae but haven't gotten much further. The main thing is they're still at it! There are always slumps in the larval rearing process and it takes perseverance to get through!

  2. I feel there is termite attack at my home so I am thinking to conduct termite’s inspection. But I have never used any pest control services and I have having difficulty in hiring Termite inspection mid north coast. Could you provide some tips to hire best pest control services?

    1. Hi Dawn,

I'm very sorry I didn't see your comment until now, (6 months later!).
In Hawaii pests are such a problem that we have many pest companies to choose from. Most give free estimates as well. So I ask friends who they have used then have at least 3 companies come and inspect. I ask them questions about what product they will use and how they will treat. Then I research their products (toxicity to fish) and decide who to hire.
If your lucky what you think is a termites problem may just be something else not as damaging. I haven't been that lucky yet.

  3. Well, that's a relief. At least you could deal with the problem before returning to your usual routine. Anyway, I hope you found a way to deal with the termites before they do any significant damage to your home. Take care!

    1. Hi Alta,

I ended up just spot treating rather than tenting but the termites will probably catch up with me in the end and I'll have to tent treat at some point. At least these dry wood termites aren't as damaging.
I do have a Sentricon system for the subterranean termites which are the ones I really worry about .

      Thanks,
      Karen
